World War I Soldier
I was stumbling through no-mans land,
Dragging my gun behind me.
My heart banging as fast as a cheetah chasing its prey.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Grenades thrown in the air.
Men as petrified as birds shouting retreat.
I could taste the bitterness of smoke firing from the guns.
I could feel death in my body, my lungs trapped.
Where’s my family?
What am I doing here?
Why me?
Where are all my friends?
Where are their weapons?
Then I see them on the ground.
Dead. Dead like a shot rabbit.
What would you do if you were me?
