Federation ‘Wild Night Out’

Our ‘wild night out’ was run by Devon Discovery Services. It was a great chance for our years two and three to meet socially and to work together. It was also a great transition activity designed to help our Top Infants with their move into the Junior classes. For many who had never enjoyed a night under canvas it was quite an experience! Here is a report from two of the children who went. Unfortunately there are no pictures, the weather was pretty poor and I didn’t want to risk taking my camera out in the rain!

Our Wild Night Out

On Wednesday and Thursday 11th and 12th July, year two and three children from Parracombe, Lynton and Kentisbury went to Arlington Court for a Wild Night Out.

First we met at the car park at 5 o’clock and gave ourselves special names like Charlie Cat and Jamie Jaguar. Then we took a long walk in the woods where a man called Rich told us a story about a time when the woods were grey and a rainbow went over the trees and smashed. Millions of pieces fell on the ground and now they find a lot more colour when they walk in the wood. We had a cocktail party where we crumpled up leaves and other things and put them in a cup and at the end we all had to smell each other’s cocktail. Then we had to pick a card and we had to find what was written on it. Mine was something bumpy and heavy. We had to swap containers with someone else and try to guess the words they had. Finally we reached camp.

We sat down and ate some tea which was cooked on the camp fire. It was pasta and sauce. Next we put all our bags in the tents. After that we got changed into our warmest clothes and went on a night walk to look for bats and owls. We saw three different kinds of bat but no owl. We listened to the sounds of the bats on a special type of radio that Rich had. They all make different sounds. When we got back it was late and we sat round the campfire drinking chocolate and listening while Rich told us a story about Fire Giants. We were all exhausted when we got to bed.

The next morning a weird instrument being played woke us up at 4.30am for the start of our breakfast! Following this we went for a walk to listen to the sounds of the woods. We had to try and draw the sounds on a piece of paper. After this we had a second breakfast of toast and packed up our tents. On our walk back from the camp we made colour slides with leaves and pieces of cardboard. Our parents collected us at 11 o’clock. It had all been great fun.
