Eid Ul Fitr

The Junior children celebrated Eid (the end of Ramadan) on Wednesday 1st October. Mrs Freer very kindly cooked up a feast to resemble this day when Muslims party with friends and family, share a meal and have lots of sweet things to eat. The children ate figs, dates, olives, pitta bread, humus, couscous, tzatziki and falafel and all enjoyed tasting the foods and wishing each other Id Mubarak which means have a happy and blessed Eid. They also enjoyed listening to Mrs Freer’s account of the time she spent living in Dubai and hearing how the Muslims of the Untied Arab Emirates celebrated Eid.

This activity fitted in well with the children’s ‘celebrations’ topic work. In this unit, children are exploring celebrations from a range of faiths and reflect upon how all of these are celebrated in Britain as we live in a multi-cultural society. They are developing their geography skills through locating where in the world celebrations are held; history skills by looking at the traditions of festivals and how these have changed over time; ICT skills through doing internet research and producing presentations; RE knowledge through looking at Christian, Buddhist, Sikh, Hindu, Muslim and Jewish celebrations; and art and music through exploring how these festivals are expressed.
