Art & Craft Club

The Parracombe School Art & Craft Club meets after school on Wednesdays. The main aim of the club is to give the children the chance to explore a range of different styles and skills and to generally have fun with art. They are given the opportunity to work individually and on joint projects.

Membership of the club comes from across the whole school and we encourage them to share their skills and help each other wherever possible.

We have lots of exciting plans for the Art Club this year:

Please come back to the website throughout the year to see photos of the various activities getting underway.

Mosaic

There was an old and rather decrepit mosaic on the wall in the junior playground and, as we knew that the school was due to be refurbished over the summer, we decided it was time to replace it.

First of all the children measured the existing piece so that we could make one of about the same size. Then we talked about the sort of design we would like to have and the colours we would use.

We hadn't tried this at all before so we decided to have a go at something small to start with to get an idea of how to work with the materials. Each child made their own mosaic pot-stand and then we made extra ones which we sold at various village events. We made enough money to pay for all the Art Club children to go on a trip to the Broomhill Sculpture Garden at the end of term and many Parracombe households are now proud owners of very individual pot-stands!

Making the big mosaic was harder than we thought because we had put curvy lines in our design which meant that we had to do quite a lot of tile cutting and we had been quite ambitious in all the things we wanted to include.
We used the direct method of applying the tiles for the background areas and the indirect method for the motifs as this allowed small groups to work on them together away from the main piece.

The mosaic is nearly complete now and the outside of the school is fresh and bright and shiny after the repainting so we are very much looking forward to getting it installed.
